Be prepared to laugh when you join Matt Jackson at the Library April 2 for an evening of exceptional storytelling, humour and candour as he relates stories from his Canadian Travels.

“In April, 1997, Matt Jackson quit his job, strode to the edge of the Trans-Canada Highway near Lake Louise, Alberta and began the journey of a lifetime. His plan? To spend several months hitchhiking across Canada, meeting Canadians from every walk of life and experiencing firsthand our country’s breathtaking landscape. The trip was suppose to take three months – maybe four, tops.” (jacket cover, The Canadian Chronicles by Matthew Jackson)

Jackson rode on horseback, sailed across the Great Lakes, paddled a canoe, flew in a Twin Otter – but mostly bummed rides in cars and trucks – on his way across the country, finally reaching Newfoundland in 2000. Along the way he relied on Canadian hospitality to get him from point to point and sometimes to provide a warm bed.

At the end of his four  year thumbing tour he wrote a book. The Canada Chronicles: A Four-year Hitchhiking Odyssey, won the IPPY award for best North American travel memoir in 2004. His work has also been featured in more than two dozen popular magazines, including Canadian Geographic, Explore and Photo Life.

In 2006, Jackson Launched two titles from a new book series; “Mugged by a Moose” and “I Sold My Gold Tooth for Gas Money.”
