Tragic accident at weekend fishing tournament

A 42- year old Slave Lake man drowned Sunday after the boat he was in overturned during a weekend fishing tournament

Owen John Ostopchuk and a passenger were in the boat when it flipped near Spruce Point Park and police say waves at the time of the incident were estimated to be six or seven feet high.

In a Press release, High Prairie RCMP say that they received a complaint of a boat that had flipped over on Lesser Slave Lake. They responded to find a unconscious male, who was not wearing a life jacket, on the lakeshore. Police, bystanders and EMS attempted CPR but were unsuccessful. The second passenger, who was wearing a life jacket, was treated at Slave Lake Hospital and later released.

“Both men were brought to shore by two individuals who donned life jackets and swam out to provide aid and both men should be commended for their act of bravery,” said Cpl. Barry Ledoux.

RCMP are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
