Set in New York City, The Other Guys follows Detective Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell), a forensic accountant who’s more interested in paperwork than hitting the streets, and Detective Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg), a tough guy who has been stuck with Allen as his partner ever since an unfortunate run—in with Derek Jeter. Allen and Terry idolize the city’s top cops, Danson and Highsmith (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson), but when an opportunity arises for the Other Guys to step up, things don’t quite go as planned. IMDB

Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) had everything a modern woman is supposed to dream of having — a husband, a house, a successful career — yet like so many others, she found herself lost, confused, and searching for what she really wanted in life. Newly divorced and at a crossroads, Gilbert steps out of her comfort zone, risking everything to change her life, embarking on a journey around the world that becomes a quest for self—discovery. In her travels, she discovers the true pleasure of nourishment by eating in Italy; the power of prayer in India, and, finally and unexpectedly, the inner peace and balance of true love in Bali. Based upon the bestselling memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love proves that there really is more than one way to let yourself go and see the world. IMDB

When he arrives on the rural Louisiana farm of Louis Sweetzer, the Reverend Cotton Marcus expects to perform just another routine “exorcism” on a disturbed religious fanatic. An earnest fundamentalist, Sweetzer has contacted the charismatic preacher as a last resort, certain his teenage daughter Nell is possessed by a demon who must be exorcized before their terrifying ordeal ends in unimaginable tragedy. Buckling under the weight of his conscience after years of parting desperate believers with their money, Cotton and his crew plan to film a confessionary documentary of this, his last exorcism. But upon arriving at the already blood drenched family farm, it is soon clear that nothing could have prepared him for the true evil he encounters there. Now, too late to turn back, Reverend Marcus’ own beliefs are shaken to the core when he and his crew must find a way to save Nell – and themselves – before it is too late. IMDB

‘Giving back’ provides its own reward. Rotary Club of Slave Lake President Russ MacIntyre, right, thanks Leslie and Barbara Ann Sargunaraj for the report on their role in the Belize Literacy Project.

M.Partington-Richer

Barbara-Ann and Leslie Sargunaraj could be forgiven for complaining they never had a break from teaching this summer. But they won’t. In fact the teachers say they’d do it again in a heartbeat.

This is the second summer in a row that the Slave Lake teachers have spent part of their traditional summer break teaching.

But they’re doing it in the Central American country of Belize. And their ‘students’ are principals and fellow teachers, all part of Rotary International’s Belize Literacy project.

Photo: Barbara Ann Sargunaraj (Back row – Centre) with teachers in the Literacy session.

“It’s enriching – especially as a teacher,” said Leslie after their presentation to the supporting Rotary Club of Slave Lake last week. “And it (is also fulfilling knowing that the lessons) will impact the whole country.”

“It’s nice to give back –especially within your own profession,” echoes his wife. “And the fact that it’s in another country is a bonus.”

Leslie Sargunaraj (back row ) with a group of secondary teachers.

The two spent the first two weeks of August sharing their know-how in the town of San Ignacio. That’s the same community where they worked with teachers last summer.

Barb insists it’s ‘the best’ of seven communities across Belize that Rotarians and Alberta teachers worked in this summer, talking about everything from curriculum to classroom management.

During the first week, the teams of three or four Albertan teachers in each community worked with primary school principals – in essence ‘training the trainers’. In the second week they acted as support for those individuals who’d slipped into the instructors’ role – and they did workshops for secondary school principals.

In that way they shared their expertise with an estimated 3,000 teachers across the country, said Leslie. The local teachers were also among several who took boxes of much needed supplies to distribute to their ‘students’.

Like last year they collected donations from throughout the community to share with Belize teachers. Their effort was also supported by a $500 donation from Slave Lake Rotarians to purchase still more materials.

Photo: Leslie and Barbara Ann Sargunaraj (back row – second from right) with other Alberta teachers being welcomed by the Rotary Club of Santa Elena.

Of special interest and importance to Belize teachers and administrators was the fact that the country is preparing to remove corporal punishment from its classrooms.

It’s not that it’s used often, said Barbara Ann, but its existence has served as a deterrent or ‘promise’ for over-zealous students.

Leslie was at the head of the class when their group addressed that subject. In fact, the long-time teacher admitted he relied heavily on the province’s Learning department website when he talked about “alternatives for classroom management.”

The entire lesson was “based on positive behaviour,” he said.

Photo: The Sacred Heart College campus in San Ignacio where Leslie and Barbara Ann Sargunaraj spent the first two weeks of August sharing their know-how. (Photos courtesy Barbara Ann Sargunaraj)

Principals, teachers and residents across the country are deeply appreciative of the Rotary International effort, said Barbara Ann.“And this year even the country’s Ministry of Education “was much more involved.”

But it was clearly a Rotary effort from the get-go, she added. “And if we needed anything – from information to a ride somewhere — all we had to do was ask a Rotarian.”

Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan directs an international cast in “Inception,” an original sci-fi actioner that travels around the globe and into the intimate and infinite world of dreams. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the best in the dangerous art of extraction: stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible—inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse; their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming. This summer, your mind is the scene of the crime. IMDB

Photo: Tuesday, August 17, 2010 The Lesser Slave Regional Fire Service responding to a call from Allarie Cleaners. Captain Karl Hill operating the ladder on the ladder truck with Captain Ken Bolan climbing the ladder.

The new fire truck and ladder were put to good use last Tuesday when a main power feed near Allarie Cleaners shorted out, and sent sparks and melting plastic flying in all directions.

“The main power from the power pole to our building started arcing and power started to flicker inside the building,” said Bruce Allarie, from Allarie Cleaners.

“That is when we (employees) started to hear banging and popping coming from outside the building. The connection came loose and eventually broke free from the building.”

The fire department was dispatched at 9:54 a.m and the first unit was on scene at 9:59. The fire department responded with Unit 10 (command unit), Unit 7 (command unit), Ladder 1 and pumper 4, and 14 Fire Fighters.

“The response time was very quick from the fire department, said Allarie, “Jamie Coutts (Fire Chief ) arrived within about 2-3 minutes with the fire crew about 1-2 minutes behind him. The ladder truck was on scene where they used it to inspect the roof.”

This was the second official response for the ladder truck, since coming into service in July.

“The ladder truck was used to quickly, safely and efficiently get firefighters on the roof of the building of Allarie Cleaners to ensure that there was no fire spread,” said Jim Meldrum, volunteer firefighter.

“Nobody was hurt and damage was negligible,” and ATCO Electric and the RCMP also responded to the call.”

ATCO electric reconnected power very quickly and Allarie Cleaners was back in business by 2:00 p.m.

Photo: Tyler Warmen, Unit 4 pumper operator (Photos courtesy of Jim Meldrum)

The new ladder truck has the capacity to raise, extend and rotate it’s 75 foot ladder for rescues and above ground fire operations, elevated master streams as well as a high capacity pump for pumper operations.

“As our town has grown and features larger buildings, apartment buildings, hotels and big box stores, it became necessary for our fire department to meet the needs of the community for now and in the future,” said Meldrum.

Training for the operation of the ladder truck began the May long weekend for a select group of experienced Slave Lake firefighters.

“Training on the use of the new ladder truck is fairly comprehensive, considering it is a much more complicated, heavy, powerful and intricate piece of apparatus, carrying with it increased risks and hazards associated with its use, said Meldrum.

Fire service Instructors for the ladder truck training came from a busy downtown Edmonton Fire Hall, Edmonton International Airport Fire Department and a Vancouver suburb fire department.
