I am writing this on behalf of the Kinette Club of Slave Lake.

We would like to take this opportunity to raise awareness about the hanging flower baskets and to brag about how wonderful our town looks this summer - and well okay – we are looking for more donations but I will get to that!

I have heard it over and over again this summer - “Wow – downtown looks gorgeous!” I could not agree more. This year the Town of Slave Lake has added numerous large self watering pots that look fantastic!

Karl Hill from the TOSL told me that these new pots reduce watering from daily to twice a week.

I have never seen another town so full of flowers during the summer months – Slave Lake should be proud.

A huge part of our “Community in Bloom” has been The Kinettes hanging flower baskets. The Kinettes have supplied the baskets to beautify main street for over 15 years.

Every year we rely on donations from businesses and individuals to purchase the baskets.

The Town of Slave Lake donates the time of a summer student to watering the baskets - which is a huge job in itself and takes a few hours every day!

However that job next year will be cut in half thanks to the fact that the new hanging pots (purchased with a grant from the TOSL) will be self watering.

Unfortunately, just like last year, we are low on donations. In 2009 we were short about $1,000 on the flower basket project. For 2010 to this point we are short about $5,000.

We are in drastic need of donations in order to plan for Slave Lake to look just as beautiful next year. If we do not cover the cost of the flower baskets this year I think we will have no choice but to reduce the number of pots we hang.

Please help us to keep our town bloomin’ next year.

On Wednesday, June 2 Great Escapes and The Business Factory joined forces and put on a fundraising BBQ for Relay for Life.  Five dollars got you a hamburger or hotdog and pop, and a chance to win a gift basket.

A total of  $942.00 was raised and all proceeds will go to the Relay For Life.

Liz Weinrich was the winner of the Gift Basket and Carolann Porterfield from the Business Factory thanks everyone for coming out to their BBQ to support the Relay.

“The Business Factory doesn’t have a team in the relay this year,” said Porterfield, “but a few of the ladies at Great Escapes have a team  called Friends & Family.”

There are 27 teams registered for Relay For Life – Lesser Slave Lake 2010, and some of the teams have some very creative names – Pirates of the “Cure”ibbean, Biggest Loser Ladies, Determined Diva’s, flip flops, Municipal Marchers, The Tumor Terminators…

The 3rd Annual Lesser Slave Relay For Life will take place June 11, 2010, 7:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m at Roland Michener Secondary School Track, Slave Lake, Alberta.

The Opening Ceremony and Survivor’s Victory Lap will start Friday, June 11 at 6:30 p.m. and the Relay for Life will officially begin at 7 p.m.

The Luminary Ceremony will commence at dusk (around 11:00 p.m.)

You are invited to drop into your local ATB Financial Branch on Friday, May 7 for a cake auction and help support the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

A fundraising BBQ will be held May, 14 from 11:30 to 2:00 p.m. and a bake sale is planned for May 28.

Until May May 31, ATB Financial locations will be participating in the annual “Teddy for a Toonie” campaign.

We might not see “shaved heads” at this year’s campaign but the crew at ATB Financial probably have another hair-raising idea to reach their goal.

Maybe ATB blue hair?

Their goal this year is to raise $6,000.00 and they have until May 31 to reach it.

To help raise funds to meet last year’s goal of $5,000.00, Pearl Pearson, ATB Financial manager and Darlene Price, CSR had their heads shaved.

“We are organizing a few things to raise money for this year’s campaign,” said Pearson, “we have chocolates for sale for $2.00, Teddy Bears and a so cute Polar bear for $15.00,” said Pearson.

“We also will have a draw for $500 at the end of the campaign and tickets for the draw may be purchased at the branch for $2.00 per ticket.”

During the campaign, customers at ATB branches and agencies across Alberta can also donate $2 to children’s health by entering a Teddy for a Toonie draw that offers a chance to win a teddy bear.

All proceeds from the ‘Teddy for a Toonie Campaign” support The Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Both foundations are non-profit organizations devoted to ensuring children from across Alberta have access to the special medical treatments they need.  Every dollar raised will go to the two foundations.

Lots of fundraisers in Slave Lake this week for Haitian Earthquake relief efforts.

Tuesday, Jan 26  at 6:30 pm there will be a “Basketball Fundraiser” at St. Mary of the Lake School . Students at the school will be hosting a senior high basketball game against the R.C.M.P and other community members and the game is open to the public.

Admission is by donation and during the game, volunteers will be selling $2.00 “court shot” raffle tickets for three chances to win a prize. If your ticket is drawn you get to shoot from the half court line. If you miss the first shot,  you qualify for a second shot and the second prize. If you miss again, you instantly win a smaller prize. Students will also be selling chips, popcorn, pop and Tim Hortons (donated) coffee. All proceeds will go towards the Haiti Fund. Everyone is invited to come out, enjoy the game and support this worthwhile cause.

Wednesday, Jan 27 - “Hotcakes for Haiti” pancake breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the New Town Office. Sponsored by the Rotary Club and the Town Of Slave Lake. $5.00 per plate and donations will be accepted. Any donations over $50.00 will receive a tax donation receipt.

Tim Hortons Coin Box Collection Fundraiser will continue until Feb. 1.  Sandra Mackay, Owner of the local Tim Hortons said that until Monday, February 1 the familiar Tim Horton Children’s Foundation coin boxes found on every Tim Hortons counter will be designated to UNICEF’s Haitian Earthquake relief efforts.

Friday, Jan 22 local schools participated in a “HATS for HAITI” challenge. Staff & students wore hats and donated $2.00  towards a Haitian relief fund.

Roland Michener Junior High Assistant Principal, Lisa Palko reported that her school raised $810.00 with all proceeds going to the Red Cross for earthquake relief efforts. E.G. Wahlstrom Principal Donna Melvin reported over $1200.00 was raised at their school.

No word yet on how much was raised at St. Mary of the Lake School.

The Animal Rescue Committee of Slave Lake will be holding their annual Paws ‘N’ Prada show on Saturday, September 26 at Northern Lakes College. 

“There will be guest speakers, a mystery live auction, great door prizes and silent auction items, ” says Vanessa Houston with ARC.  ”You can also book your xmas photo with Santa and we have 3 different scenes for you to choose from including a fire place and xmas tree.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m and the show starts at 7:30. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children 12 and under.

Tickets are available at The Business Factory, Century 21 and Treatz R Uz and all proceeds go to the Animal Rescue Committee of  Slave Lake.

The Animal Rescue Committee is a diverse group of individuals working towards obtaining their own shelter to house lost or stray animals found within town and surrounding areas.

Since March of 2005, ARC has become a registered society, set up foster homes, rescued over 100 dogs and successfully found homes for them. Arc has also been accepting dog food donations and supplies from many generous community members.

ARC is presently working on a budget for a shelter that will cost more than $200,000 and depend on donations and events such as Paws ‘N’ Prada to reach their goal.

All proceeds from the Royal LePage National Garage Sale for Shelter held Saturday, May 23 will go to the Northern Haven Women’s Shelter in Slave Lake.

“The garage sale was awsome,” said Cathy Jones of Royal LePage, “we received lots of donations from the community and we raised $4016.” 

The fun charity event was more than just a garage sale. The dunk tank was very popular thanks to great sportsmanship from Ray Tardiff, Chris Massicott and Chris Cooper from the local RCMP detachment, Fox Radio hosts Double Jay Johanason, Courtney Murphy and Bryson McGloin with Royal LePage.

Face painting was provided by Michelle Vekved and Jonathan Jesperson from the Funny Farm brought in a great selection for the petting zoo.

“The Slave Lake community is awesome for supporting events like this,” says Cathy, “and we can never be successful without the help from the community.”

May is shelter month at Royal LePage and over $120,000 was raised at garage sales across Canada in support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation.

Coats will be available to those who need them at the Friendship Centre from November 3 to December 5, Monday to Friday.

This fundraiser is for ongoing operational costs of running a library (like buying books or charging below cost for photocopies).  You can get a tax-deductible receipt for all donations.  As well, the Alberta government has developed the Community Spirit Grant to encourage people to make personal donations to their communities.  All personal donations made to the library will be matched by this Community Spirit money.
