Vanderwell Heritage Lodge residents took in the annual Patchwork Fabrics Quilt Show on Saturday August 21. While at the show, three residents from the lodge, Sennie Fedorus, Audrey Mabley and Patsy Parent drew the winning tickets for the lodge raffle fundraiser.

Bill Clark of Widewater was the winner of the 1st place prize, a quilt donated by “Caring Hearts and Hands,” the 2nd Prize was won by Suzanne Boyles of Slave Lake and 3rd place went to Mike Wahlstrom of Slave Lake.

The proceeds from the raffle went to the Vanderwell Heritage Lodge Expansion Fund.

Thank-you to everyone who purchased tickets, making our raffle a success.

Barbara-Ann and Leslie Sargunaraj could be forgiven for complaining they never had a break from teaching this summer. But they won’t. In fact the teachers say they’d do it again in a heartbeat.

This is the second summer in a row that the Slave Lake teachers have spent part of their traditional summer break teaching.

But they’re doing it in the Central American country of Belize. And their ‘students’ are principals and fellow teachers, all part of Rotary International’s Belize Literacy project.

“It’s enriching – especially as a teacher,” said Leslie after their presentation to the supporting Rotary Club of Slave Lake last week. “And it (is also fulfilling knowing that the lessons) will impact the whole country.”

“It’s nice to give back –especially within your own profession,” echoes his wife. “And the fact that it’s in another country is a bonus.”

The two spent the first two weeks of August sharing their know-how in the town of San Ignacio. That’s the same community where they worked with teachers last summer.

Barb insists it’s ‘the best’ of seven communities across Belize that Rotarians and Alberta teachers worked in this summer, talking about everything from curriculum to classroom management.

During the first week, the teams of three or four Albertan teachers in each community worked with primary school principals – in essence ‘training the trainers’. In the second week they acted as support for those individuals who’d slipped into the instructors’ role – and they did workshops for secondary school principals.

In that way they shared their expertise with an estimated 3,000 teachers across the country, said Leslie. The local teachers were also among several who took boxes of much needed supplies to distribute to their ‘students’.

Like last year they collected donations from throughout the community to share with Belize teachers. Their effort was also supported by a $500 donation from Slave Lake Rotarians to purchase still more materials.

Of special interest and importance to Belize teachers and administrators was the fact that the country is preparing to remove corporal punishment from its classrooms.

It’s not that it’s used often, said Barbara Ann, but its existence has served as a deterrent or ‘promise’ for over-zealous students.

Leslie was at the head of the class when their group addressed that subject. In fact, the long-time teacher admitted he relied heavily on the province’s Learning department website when he talked about “alternatives for classroom management.”

The entire lesson was “based on positive behaviour,” he said.

Principals, teachers and residents across the country are deeply appreciative of the Rotary International effort, said Barbara Ann.“And this year even the country’s Ministry of Education “was much more involved.”

But it was clearly a Rotary effort from the get-go, she added. “And if we needed anything – from information to a ride somewhere — all we had to do was ask a Rotarian.”

On August 10th in Wabasca and August 11th, 2010, in High Prairie, a total of 102 Occupational Health & Safety Awards were presented to Lesser Slave Area Wildland firefighters. These awards were in recognition of their “feet in the ashes” work on the fire line without incident, accident or injury within a five year period.

Ninety-eight firefighters received a Leatherman Award in recognition of 500 hours on the line without incident and 4 firefighters received $100 Canadian Tire gift certificates in recognition of 1,000 hours on the line without incident.

The hours that the firefighters are on man-up or waiting in readiness to be deployed to fires, is not included in these hours. These individuals work as contract firefighters and come from all areas of the Lesser Slave Wildfire Management Area.

The firefighters recognized in Wabasca come from the First Nations of Bigstone including Calling Lake, Trout/Peerless and Chipewyan Lakes as well as the Métis Local 90 of Wabasca/Demarais.

Fifty individuals were eligible for awards but only a fraction of the award recipients were able to receive their awards in person because two crews from Wabasca had been exported to British Columbia.

The firefighters recognized in High Prairie come from the First Nations of Driftpile, Whitefish and Sucker Creek as well as East Prairie and Gift Lake Métis Settlements. Although there was also a crew from East Prairie on export to British Columbia, a large number of the 40 individuals recognized were able to attend.

Kevin Parkinson and Shannon Holman of the Slave Lake Fire Centre were on hand both days to present awards. Leah Lovequist, wildfire information officer represented SRD in Wabasca on August 10th and Bill Lesiuk helped present awards in High Prairie on August 11th.

Four individuals were also presented with “Long Term Service Awards” for 30 plus years of service with forestry. They each received an engraved silver pulaski as recognition and appreciation for their dedication over the years.

William Gullion was awarded his pulaski in Wabasca and Robert Collins, Gordon Thunder and Herb Anderson received their pulaskis in High Prairie.

Madeleine Courtoureille was also given a volunteer service award for posing as Bertie Beaver in the High Prairie parade.

Congratulations to all award recipients of the Occupational Health and Safety Awards.

Looking for that unique gift idea? The Lesser Slave Bird Observatory has an adopt-a-bird program that will make a perfect gift for a friend, family member or yourself!

Thanks to Martha Urquhart with the Community Reading Program, myslavelake.com received an adoption certificate for a ‘Sharp-shinned Hawk.’

The number one bird banded at the LSLBO

“I’ve chosen the ‘Sharp- shinned Hawk’ as your bird because you, like the hawk are very effective at “hunting” down opportunities to promote our services,” said Urquhart.

“You, like the hawk, have the amazing ability to zigzag through the community to keep its residents up to date on all that is going on at any given moment.”

Urquhart presented Myslavelake.com with a formal adoption certificate featuring a colour photo of the Sharp-shinned Hawk. The certificate also includes details of the bird’s band number, age, sex, weight and wing span, as well as some general information on its range and habits.

If you would like to adopt a bird, all you need to do is choose the type of bird that you would like to adopt from the list of birds that are banded at the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory and fill out the form, and send it to the LSLBO.
