Fleet in Idaho Falls March 7, 2010

With the help of the SLave Lake Rotary Club, a used yet re-furbished fire truck from Slave Lake is on its way to help communities in Mexico and should reach its destination this weekend.

The 2010 Highway to Mexico crew set off from Grande Prairie at 6:15 a.m. Friday, March 5 for their annual 5,000-kilometre road trip to Mazatlan.

The Slave Lake truck is one of four fire trucks that is being delivered this year along with an ambulance and a handicapped-accessible bus.

The vehicles are being driven from Alberta to Mazatlan by a team of volunteer Rotarians from Grande Prairie and Edson with 2 drivers per vehicle. They are expected to arrive in Mexico around March 11 and once there, the vehicles will be driven to the communities.

For 8 years the Highway to Mexico program has donated and delivered fire trucks, school buses and ambulances to Mazatlan.

Last summer Rotarians from Grande Prairie picked up the fire truck that the Slave Lake Rotary Club had procured from the regional fire service and the Town.

“When the Grande Prairie Rotarians were here they told us about their last fleet delivery that also included a used school bus,” said Mouallem.
The big yellow school bus was clearly a big hit in the village where some students walk as many as eight kilometers – one way – every day. It’s a distance that makes some parents keep their daughters home – and consequently uneducated, he added.

“One of the Rotarians offered to take some kids for a quick ride around the village, and when the ride was over another counted 150 kids getting off the 48-passenger bus!”

In fact, the arrival of the school bus also prompted officials in that area to actually build a road to the remote community’s school, he added.

Mouallem said the emergency vehicle fleet program in Grande Prairie has been going on for several years.

He applauded the Town of Slave Lake for donating its used fire truck to the local Rotary club. He also said Regional Fire Service Fire Chief Jamie Coutts indicated that some members from his volunteer squads had offered to go to Mexico to help train volunteer firefighters there.

And nobody was more surprised than Breanna Carnegie, who was informed about her outstanding achievement in late February. “I was really anxious to get my marks back, so I stopped by the office one day to ask if they were available,” says Carnegie. What she didn’t expect to hear was that she was perfect on her provincial diploma exam.

“When I asked about the status of my marks I was informed that I couldn’t have done better in math. That’s when the reality of it all started to sink in,” Carnegie recalls. “After that, Mr. (Brian) Carleton (acting senior high principal at RMSS) approached me, shook my hand and congratulated me on a job well done.” Carnegie’s Math Teacher, Leslie Sargunaraj, is equally impressed by the results.

“To have answered every single question on the Pure Math 30 Diploma Exam perfectly is remarkable,” Sargunaraj says, adding that the same can be said of Carnegie’s tenacity when it comes to problem solving in math.

“Breanna is always asking questions and looking for innovative methods to solve a problem,” Sargunaraj explains. “She’s very conscientious about completing assignments, tests and projects. She even did a project on Pascal’s Triangle as a bonus.”

(In mathematics, Pascal’s triangle is a geometric arrangement of the binomial coefficients in a triangle. It’s named after mathematician Blaise Pascal)

High Prairie School Division Superintendent Laura Poloz says Carnegie’s outstanding achievement “is a true reflection of the hard work, commitment and support shared by students, parents and teachers.”

The Grade 12 honour student, who has maintained a high standard of excellence in Pure Math 30 with a mark of 95 per cent, says her parents were elated to hear the good news.

Carnegie, who is set to graduate this year, says her future plans include pursuing a post-secondary education at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. Her plan is to take one year of general studies in science prior to entering the Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences program.

Diploma Examinations are administered in select Grade 12 courses. The examinations certify the level of individual student achievement in specific courses and are often an important factor in admissions to universities and colleges.

Thirty junior high students from Roland Michener Secondary School absorbed the sights and sounds of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Winspear Centre as part of a musically uplifting educational experience on Feb. 16, 2010.

”It was a really amazing opportunity for our students, many of whom had never been inside the beautiful Winspear Centre before, or experienced the orchestra close up,” says Ellen Criss, RMSS Band Teacher.

Students sat in front row seats (right under the noses of the percussionists) and were greeted by Edmonton Symphony Orchestra Conductor Lucas Waldin, who spoke with students prior to treating them to a one-of-a-kind concert performance.

“Maestro Waldin was great with the students and made them feel right at home. He led them through a beautiful program designed to draw parallels between visual art and orchestra music,” Criss explains, adding that specific pieces of art were selected and displayed on a “huge overhead screen to visually illustrate what the spectators were hearing aurally.”

The orchestra portrayed background, line, character, emotion and “magic” throughout the educational performance. Criss says one of the highlights was the appearance of the wizard during a selection of Harry Potter music. Another wonderful moment occurred when the huge and majestic pipe organ was played during the ‘Great Gate of Kiev.’

The program consisted of: Lavallée’s O Canada , excerpts from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Handel’s Concerto Grosso, Opus 6, No.5 and Allegro, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, Debussy’s Prélude à l’Après midi d’un, Faune, John Estacio’s Borealis and Frenergy, as well as John Williams’ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

The 2009-‘10 season marks the first for Lucas Waldin as Resident Conductor for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. This mentorship position is made possible through the Canada Council for the Arts.

Mr. Waldin graduated in 2006 from the Cleveland Institute of Music with a Masters in Conducting. He has performed with L’Orchestre du Festival Beaulieu-Sur-Mer (Monaco), Staatstheater Cottbus (Brandenburg), and Bachakademie Stuttgart.

Lucas was assistant conductor of the contemporary orchestra RED (Cleveland), director of the Cleveland Bach Consort, and a Discovery Series Conductor at the Oregon Bach Festival.

In 2007, he was invited to conduct the Miami-based New World Symphony Orchestra in masterclasses given by Michael Tilson Thomas. In Lucerne, Switzerland in 2009, he also participated in a masterclass led by Bernard Haitink with the Lucerne Festival Strings.

“A priority initiative of Northern Lakes College is to identify solutions for healthcare skills shortages in our northern region,” says Trevor Gladue, Chair of Northern Lakes College Board of Governors. Health career programs have been an area of growth for Northern Lakes College over the past three years, with over 62% increase in the number of programs offered. “On behalf of the Minister of Health and Wellness, the Honourable Gene Zwozdesky, I am pleased to be here today to celebrate the opening of the High Prairie Health Learning Centre,” said Mr. Monteith. “This centre will help improve Alberta’s health workforce capacity by providing a local training facility for people in the community and surrounding area to become qualified Licensed Practical Nurses, Emergency Medical Technicians and Responders as well as Health Care Aides. Increasing access to education and focusing delivery of that education in rural areas supports the Government of Alberta’s commitment to ensuring access to patient centred care.”

High Prairie Health Learning Centre is a 5,500 square foot building purchased by Northern Lakes College Board of Governors in 2009. The new space that can accommodate up to 60 students is additional to an existing High Prairie campus that is currently operating at capacity for other programs.

In addition to two large classrooms for face-to-face program delivery, the campus is equipped with one healthcare simulation lab with four hospital beds, designed to replicate an in-hospital learning environment. The lab houses medium and high fidelity patient simulators, providing hands-on training for students in the practical nursing program. The learning centre also has four distance learning rooms for students to connect in real-time to other students in similar facilities across the region.

Janine Gauchier, practical nursing student, is very excited to be a part of the Learning Centre. “The Centre is amazing. Learning in a hospital-like environment really helps me to become familiar with what it is going to be like in the workplace. Small class sizes make it easy to get to know your instructors, and for your instructors to get to know you.” Gauchier went on to say, “I have two kids. It’s so much easier being able to go to school close to home, instead of having to move a city. I have the support of family and friends.”

Northern Lakes College has campuses in over 30 communities across north-central Alberta. Programs range from upgrading to careers, from university to apprenticeship trades. Flexible learning opportunities include full time or part time options. As well many classes are offered to students online or using various technologies including video conferencing.

Every year Northern Lakes College Students’ Association acknowledges two students who are deemed role models in their schools and communities. In December nominations were reviewed for the Role Model Awards, and two recipients were selected – Brenda Beaver for the non post-secondary award and Jule Asterisk for the post-secondary award.

Applicants must demonstrate that they are a role model in at least 3 of the following categories:

• Community involvement
• Leadership in and outside of school
• Academic improvement
• Willingness to assist other students
• Ability to overcome difficulties to do well at school
• Some degree of financial need

The 2010 non post-secondary award is partnered with the Northern Lakes College Board of Governors. For this school year, the recipient of the non post-secondary Role Model Award is enrolled in Academic Upgrading at the Stony Point Campus.

Brenda Beaver is the mother and main provider of 6 children. She first enrolled in Northern Lakes College’s academic upgrading program 10 years ago. She went on to complete the health care aide program and subsequently worked as an aide at the Health Centre in Wabasca.

Brenda is currently upgrading her skills in order to apply to the practical nursing program. Her marks are exceptional and as a model student, she is always willing to assist her fellow students. In her community, Brenda takes an active leadership role by participating in many worthy activities, including the Diabetic Walk, Sober Walk, and Terry Fox Run each year.

The post secondary Role Model Award is partnered by the Students’ Association with the Northern Alberta Development Council. This year, the recipient of the Students’ Association Post-secondary Role Model Award is from the Northern Lakes College Slave Lake campus.

Jule Asterisk is the Student Representative to the Board of Governors and President of the Slave Lake Campus Students’ Union. Jule has been a driving force behind this group and its activities this year.

Enrolled in University Studies, Jule has been an honour student while raising a family and juggling two jobs. She is supportive towards her fellow students and provides an excellent role model for them.

On top if this, Jule is a very active community member. She organized and helped run the “Auntie Litter” campaign, raised money for the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation, promotes literacy in the community, and coordinated a water quality study that she presented to the Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention. Jule is currently helping to organize an Introductory Cree class for academic upgrading lab day.

We may have lost the competition but Slave Lake has a legacy of 923 stories about our “Community Spirit” and we even have a 2010 Kraft Hockeyville theme song composed by Nick Borchert.

Slave Lakers also got an opportunity to relive some of their great ‘Hockey Moments” by viewing the hockey photo gallery courtesy of the Lakeside Leader. There were over 900 clicks on the photo gallery and many of the photos were submitted with stories.

As a final tribute to the 2010 Kraft Hockeyville competition we are publishing the photo/video that includes Nick Borchert’s Hockeyville theme song.
