The Police Report for the weekend of Nov. 14 to 16, states that only 15 individuals were lodged overnight at the detachment cells.

Domestic Disputes

Police responded to an early morning argument between a mother and son in the Northwest. The argument, which was fueled by the consumption of large amounts of alcohol, came to a head when the son smashed the mother’s karaoke machine. There was no physical violence and the matter was resolved when both parties were ordered to bed by police.

In another domestic dispute, a Slave Lake youth has been charged with uttering threats after telling his mother and sister that he would “slit their throats”. The argument, which police say, began over the son’s lack of allowance, grew increasingly heated until such time as the police were called to the scene. The youth was arrested and later released.

Impaired Driving

In an impaired driving incident, a man has been charged with Refusing to Provide Breath Samples. Police located a vehicle being driven erratically on 2 Ave. NW. When police stopped the vehicle, the male driver fled. The 31 year old male was quickly apprehended by police.

Breach

A 20 year old Slave Lake male is facing four new charges of Failing to Comply with Condition after breaching conditions to abstain from alcohol. The male, who police say was released from custody only four days prior after being charged with three counts of Failure to Comply, was arrested and charged after he was located intoxicated outside Billy’s Outlaw Inn.

Cyber bullying is using things like the internet or a cell phone to embarrass, humiliate, and generally make another person look bad to others or feel bad about themselves. The results of cyber bullying can be devastating, even resulting in some victims taking their own lives.

The I.C.E. (Integrated Internet Child Exploitation) Unit from the R.C.M.P. “K” Division will be making a presentation on Cyber bullying at E.G Wahlstrom School Friday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m. Parents, teachers, community members, and individuals working with children and youth are invited to attend.

The I.C.E. Unit is a multi-agency unit involving the Province of Alberta, the R.C.M.P. and other Alberta police forces. Their mandate is to protect children by investigating internet crimes involving the abuse and/or sexual exploitation of children.

In 2005, the University of Calgary released a study on cyber bullying and of the 177 students surveyed, 53% knew of someone being cyber bullied. 25% described themselves as victims of cyber bullying and 15% admitted to participating in cyber bullying activities.

Methods used as reported by the victims were identified as 23% by e-mail, 36% in chat rooms, and 41% by more than one source. 41% had no knowledge of who was cyber bullying them.

This presentation will provide you with information about internet crime, the risks, emerging trends and what you can do to protect yourself and your children.

Impaired driving charges are a common theme in the weekly Slave Lake R.C.M.P. press releases. The weekend of November 14th, police stopped a vehicle driving erratically on 2nd Ave. NW. The male attempted to escape but was quickly apprehended by police. A resulting investigation led police to believe the man was impaired.

The weekend of October 31 to November 2, three more drivers had been charged with impaired driving.

According to the Lakeside Leader, “not a single weekend has passed without an impaired charge being laid by police in the last 14 months.”

“Victims of impaired driving” is the theme for Canada’s first National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash victims to be observed Wednesday November 19, 2008.

In Canada, approximately 2,900 people die every year in car accidents and thousands more are injured. The economic cost runs into the billions, but what about the emotional toll this devastation takes on family and friends?

This National Day of Remembrance is to raise awareness of road safety and promotes ways to prevent road traffic injury and death.

Should Impaired driving laws be changed? Leave a comment and/or start a discussion on the forum.
